Jerry Mallett, president and founder of Adventure Travel Society and the 785 member Adventure Travel Trade Association has dedicated his entire career to issues concerning global understanding, preservation of the environment and responsible adventure travel. He is the creator of the annual World Congress on Adventure Travel and Ecotourism, the premier international industry event which brings together key world leaders and experts in the tourism and conservation fields. A series of successful World Congress events have been conducted in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Whistler, British Columbia; Manaus, Brazil; Hobart, Tasmania; and Nassau, Bahamas.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mallett has worked with the leading U.S. land managers in the US National Forest, Bureau of Land Management and the US. Park Service on wilderness designations, wild river protection and wildlife refuges In addition, he enjoyed a strong working relationship with Congress over a twenty year period.
Early in his career, Mr. Mallett served as the Western Field Representative for the Wilderness Society. During his ten-year stint, he prepared more than 90 wilderness proposals for national forests, national parks, national monuments, and fish and wildlife refuges. He organized public support for these wilderness areas by coordinating the efforts of more than 50 wilderness-oriented conservation organizations in the western United States. (1969-79)
Mr. Mallett was one of the key leaders in the formation of American Rivers Conservation Council. This was the first major national organization that focused solely on the protection and management of the nation’s free flowing rivers. Today, the organization is American Rivers and remains as the United States’ leading non-profit river advocate.
Mr. Mallett served at the Executive Director for the Western River Guides Association (WRGA). This western based professional river outfitter organization was the largest outfitter organization in the world for a number of years with over 450 outfitter members. WRGA was responsible for professional standards for health, safety, protection and enjoyment of the public’s adventures on western rivers. The organization, which was founded in the 1950’s, was critical in the formation and marketing of the adventure travel industry. (1979-88).
